Editor's note — United Airlines
What we've learned booking United Airlines
United Polaris is the business class product that United rebuilt from scratch in 2016 — new seats, new bedding, new amenity kits, and an entirely new lounge concept — and the result is a product that's competitive on hardware with any US carrier and many international ones. The reverse herringbone Polaris seat has direct aisle access on 777 and 787 aircraft, and United's dedicated Polaris Lounges (Chicago, San Francisco, Newark, Houston, Los Angeles, Washington Dulles) offer full dining service, shower suites, and a pre-flight experience that approaches international carrier standards. Our consolidator rates on United Polaris are available on most international routes, and for Star Alliance loyalists, the MileagePlus earning and status benefits make United the natural choice. United's strength is network breadth: they fly Polaris to more international destinations from more US gateways than any other US carrier, and their Pacific network (Japan, Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia) is the most extensive of any American airline. The product consistency has improved materially — Polaris in 2026 is a fundamentally different experience from the old BusinessFirst it replaced.

About United Airlines
A comprehensive look at United Airlines's premium cabins, service philosophy, route network, and what makes them worth flying.
Airline overview
United Polaris offers a consistent premium experience with Polaris Lounges at major US hubs. The lounges feature bedrooms, showers, and à la carte restaurant-style dining — among the best US carrier lounges.
Founded in 1926, United Airlines is headquartered in United States and operates to 200+ destinations across 50 countries. The fleet is built around Boeing 777-300ER, Boeing 787-10 and Boeing 787-9 for long-haul operations, with additional narrowbody types on regional routes. United Airlines is a Star Alliance alliance member, which gives passengers access to lounges and booking across all partner carriers worldwide.
The business class experience
United Polaris Business Class features Lie-flat pod with direct aisle access. Seat width is 22 inches and fully extended bed length is 78 inches — comfortable for passengers up to about 6'3" (190cm) to sleep fully flat. The seat layout on United Airlines's long-haul widebody aircraft typically offers direct aisle access for every business class passenger, so you never have to climb over a seatmate.
In-flight entertainment is delivered via 16-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth audio. Dining on United Airlines: Multi-course dining, Saks Fifth Avenue bedding. Baggage allowance in business class: 2 × 32kg checked. All flights include amenity kits, premium bedding, and priority boarding/baggage handling.
Lounges and ground experience
At the home hub: United Polaris Lounge (ORD/EWR/SFO/IAD/LAX) — bedrooms, showers, à la carte dining. At other airports worldwide: Star Alliance partner lounges worldwide. Lounge access is included with your business class ticket — you show your boarding pass at the lounge entrance and receive food, drinks, WiFi, and dedicated workspaces until boarding time.
On the ground at departure, United Airlines business class passengers get dedicated check-in counters, fast-track security lanes where available, and priority boarding. At arrival, baggage is tagged with priority labels and comes out first — typically saving 15-30 minutes versus economy on heavily-loaded flights.
What travelers say
“Polaris Lounges are outstanding — the bedrooms are unmatched. Consistent product across the fleet. Saks Fifth Avenue bedding is luxurious. Extensive global network via Star Alliance.”

- Boeing 777-300ERBoeing
The dominant long-haul widebody for the past two decades. Most carriers operate two cabin generations on this airframe: older 2-3-2 Business (avoid where possible) and newer 1-2-1 sliding-door cabins (Emirates Game Changer, BA Club Suite, Qatar Qsuite, AA Flagship Suite).
- Boeing 787-10Boeing
Stretched 787-9. Same cabin technology, more total seats. United, Singapore, BA, KLM, ANA, Etihad operate 787-10 on premium long-haul.
- Boeing 787-9Boeing
The most-deployed long-haul widebody in current production. Cabin pressurization (~6,000 ft) and humidity (10-15%) better than older 777 metal. Composite fuselage allows larger windows.
