United Polaris Business Class Review 2026
Last updated
United Polaris has evolved from a 2016 marketing rebrand into a genuinely competitive business class product in 2026. The deployment of the new "Polaris 2.0" seat on 787-9 aircraft (with semi-enclosed suite element) has closed some of the hardware gap to Delta One Suite, and United's Polaris Lounge network remains the strongest US-carrier premium ground experience.
The Polaris seat — original and 2.0 versions
Original Polaris seat (2016-2022 fleet deployment) is a 1-2-1 reverse-herringbone configuration on 777-300ER, 787-9, 787-10, and retrofitted 767-400ER. Pitch 78 inches, width 20.5 inches, bed length 78 inches. No closing door, privacy is via seat wings. Hardware was industry-competitive at 2016 launch but is now showing age versus Delta One Suite.
Polaris 2.0 (deploying on 787-9 delivered 2023 onward) is an updated version with semi-enclosed suite element — a taller privacy shell than original Polaris, with an optional privacy panel that extends but does not fully close as a door. It's intermediate between original Polaris and full-door Delta One Suite. Aircraft registration N15969 and newer 787-9 deliveries have Polaris 2.0; older 787-9 deliveries retain original Polaris.
Routes confirmed for Polaris 2.0: EWR-TLV, EWR-BOM, SFO-DEL, SFO-MNL, ORD-HKG. Check aircraft registration at booking if specific Polaris 2.0 hardware matters.
Polaris catering and crew
United revamped Polaris catering in 2022 with partnerships with celebrity chef Chris Pandel and others. The current program features multi-course meal service with 3-4 entree options, pre-order available. Food quality has improved meaningfully over the pre-2022 baseline but remains below Delta One and well below foreign-flag competitors like Singapore or Cathay.
Beverage program is solid. Champagne is Taittinger on most long-haul rotations, Laurent-Perrier on some flagship flights. Wine list is professionally curated and rotates.
Crew service is United's variable attribute. Top Polaris crews on flagship routes (SFO-NRT, EWR-LHR) are excellent; service on secondary routes can be less consistent. United is working to standardize, but crew-to-crew variance remains the largest gap versus Delta One service consistency.
Pajamas are provided on flights 12+ hours; amenity kits are Sunday Riley co-branded and decent. Bedding is Saks Fifth Avenue co-branded with mattress pad, duvet, and pillow.
Polaris Lounges: United's ground advantage
United's Polaris Lounge network is a genuine differentiator. Polaris Lounges are separate from United Club and provide a significantly elevated experience: made-to-order dining in a sit-down restaurant (not buffet), dedicated quiet zones, shower suites, and day-beds for pre-flight rest.
Polaris Lounge locations as of 2026: ORD Terminal 1, EWR Terminal C, SFO International Terminal, IAD (opened 2024), LAX Tom Bradley International Terminal, and HOU George Bush Intercontinental (opened 2025). Access is for Polaris passengers on same-day international departure.
The ORD Polaris Lounge is arguably the strongest United ground experience — dining room with full menu service, extensive wine list, and shower suites comparable to foreign-flag carrier hubs. EWR Polaris Lounge is similar quality.
Polaris on key routes
SFO-NRT and SFO-HND are United's premier Pacific routes — daily 787-9 (Polaris 2.0 on some rotations), consolidator pricing $4,200-5,800 round-trip. ANA (Star Alliance partner) operates the same city pairs with The Room; Polaris is competitive but The Room is hardware-superior.
EWR-LHR is United's flagship transatlantic, daily 767-400ER or 777-300ER with original Polaris. Pricing $2,800-4,200 consolidator. BA operates same route with Club Suite (closing door); for same-class hardware, BA Club Suite is the pick.
EWR-BOM and SFO-DEL are United's premier India routes, operated on 787-9 with Polaris 2.0 deployment. Consolidator pricing $4,000-5,400. Emirates via DXB and Qatar via DOH are one-stop alternatives with superior hardware (Qsuite in particular).
IAD-FRA, IAD-MUC, IAD-ZRH are United's signature Europe routes from Dulles. Pricing $3,000-4,200 consolidator. Lufthansa, SWISS, and Austrian operate competitive routes with joint-venture equivalent pricing.
MileagePlus and Star Alliance benefits
MileagePlus is United's loyalty program. Polaris cash fares earn miles based on fare paid. Premier 1K, Platinum, and Gold tier progression is a revenue-based system; Polaris tickets earn substantial Premier Qualifying Flights/Dollars.
Star Alliance partnership means MileagePlus members can earn miles on ANA, Singapore Airlines, Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian, Air Canada, Turkish Airlines, and other Star Alliance carriers. This is particularly valuable for US travelers who mix United Polaris cash purchases with Star Alliance partner redemptions.
Star Alliance Gold status (achieved via Premier Platinum or 1K) provides lounge access at Star Alliance partners globally when flying Star Alliance metal in any cabin. This is a real perk for international business travelers.
