Virgin Atlantic Upper Class Review 2026
Last updated
Virgin Atlantic Upper Class is the most distinctive business class product in commercial aviation — the only major carrier that integrates a social space (the Loft and the bar) into the business class cabin, paired with the loft seat that converts to a flat bed via a unique flip-over mechanism. This review covers what Virgin actually delivers, the seat that loyalty members debate (some love it, some hate it), and how Upper Class fits into the SkyTeam joint-venture-with-Delta era.
The Upper Class seat: distinctive but divisive
Virgin Atlantic's Upper Class seat (the loft seat in current generation) is unlike any other business class seat in commercial aviation. The seat itself is a forward-facing recliner; to convert it to a bed, the entire seat back flips forward to reveal a padded surface that is the bed. The mechanism is unique to Virgin and produces a fully flat bed that's slightly firmer than typical business class beds.
Reactions are polarized. Frequent Virgin loyalists love the loft seat for its space efficiency and the social-design philosophy. Frequent flyers used to Qsuite or Delta One Suite often find the loft seat awkward — the lack of a defined "seat" position when in bed mode means you have to fully convert to bed to lie down (no quick-recline option), and the bed surface is firmer than the soft-product beds favored by Asian carriers.
On the A350-1000 fleet (the newest Virgin long-haul aircraft), the loft seat is paired with a redesigned cabin that includes The Loft — a separate social space at the front of the Upper Class cabin with sofa seating, snacks, and standing room for in-flight socializing. The Loft is a genuine differentiator and the strongest reason to book Virgin Atlantic over a more conventional competitor.
Catering and beverage
Virgin Atlantic's catering is competent but not class-leading. The "afternoon tea" service on transatlantic afternoon departures is a genuinely good touchpoint — proper scones, finger sandwiches, and tea service that nods to the British heritage. Main meal service is multi-course with chef-curated menus rotated quarterly.
Beverage service is the soft-product highlight. Virgin's bar (on A350-1000 and select A330neo aircraft) is the second-best business class bar in the air after Emirates A380 — fully stocked, staffed by cabin crew, and genuinely usable during the cruise portion of the flight. The cocktail program is the most ambitious of any Western carrier in business class.
The Delta joint venture and SkyTeam integration
Virgin Atlantic joined SkyTeam in 2023 and the joint venture with Delta has been operationally seamless since 2025. Most Virgin transatlantic routes are now codeshared with Delta, with through-pricing that often makes booking on Virgin or Delta metal interchangeable on the same routing. SkyMiles members earn full miles on Virgin metal, and Virgin Flying Club members earn on Delta — the loyalty integration is among the strongest carrier partnerships in commercial aviation.
Delta One Suite vs Virgin Upper Class on the same JFK-LHR routing: Delta One Suite has the closing-door privacy advantage, Virgin Upper Class has The Loft social space and the more distinctive overall experience. Pricing is typically comparable with consolidator availability on both. Pick based on which experience appeals — both are competent products.
Heathrow and ground experience
Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse at LHR Terminal 3 is the airline's flagship ground experience and one of the strongest business class lounges at Heathrow. The Clubhouse design is genuinely distinctive — full restaurant with chef-prepared dining, a spa with treatments (advance booking required), a cocktail bar, and quiet zones. The Clubhouse is materially better than the standard BA Galleries Lounge experience and competitive with the Cathay Pacific First Lounge at LHR T3.
Outstation Clubhouse experiences exist at JFK Terminal 4 (smaller but solid), and SFO and LAX use SkyTeam partner lounge contracts. The JFK Clubhouse experience is the second-strongest after Heathrow.
How to book Virgin Atlantic for less
Direct-booked Virgin Atlantic Upper Class US-London runs $3,800-5,500 round-trip in 2026. Consolidator pricing through wholesale channels delivers 25-40% discounts, with our rates on JFK-LHR, BOS-LHR, and ATL-LHR consistently coming in at $2,400-3,500 in Upper Class. Virgin has more flexible trade pricing than BA and consolidator availability is generally stronger on matched dates.
Virgin Flying Club award redemption is competitive — 50,000-65,000 Virgin Points each way US-London in Upper Class. SkyTeam partner program redemption (Delta SkyMiles, KLM Flying Blue, Air France Flying Blue) on Virgin metal is also bookable but typically at higher mileage rates than direct Virgin Flying Club.
