AAdvantage Award Chart
AAdvantage business class to Asia
Per-partner mileage cost, cash-fee economics, and sweet-spot callouts for AAdvantage redemptions to Asia. Published partner award chart — fixed mileage cost per redemption.
Last updated · Reviewed by Editorial Team
AAdvantage is American Airlines' frequent-flyer programme and one of the few major US programmes that still publishes a fixed partner award chart. Partner-metal redemptions on Cathay Pacific, Qatar Airways, JAL, British Airways, and other oneworld carriers price at the chart rate; AA-operated metal moved to dynamic pricing in 2023 but partner awards held the chart through the 2024 restructure. The result: AAdvantage is the most predictable mileage currency for premium-cabin redemptions on partner metal among US legacy programmes.
East and South-East Asia — covering long-haul redemptions to cities such as Tokyo, Hong Kong, Singapore, Seoul, Bangkok, and Shanghai. The most-redeemed long-haul region for premium cabin, with the strongest partner-metal options across all three alliances.

Partner-metal comparison
Mileage cost + cash component for each bookable partner. The cheapest miles cost is rarely on the home carrier's metal.
| Partner | Sample routing | Miles (one-way) | Cash component | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cathay Pacific | New York (JFK) → Hong Kong (HKG) via Cathay metal | 85,000 | ~$75-$120 | AAdvantage partner award chart, Asia 2 region. Cathay J availability is bookable via aa.com once released. |
| Japan Airlines | Los Angeles (LAX) → Tokyo (HND) via JL metal | 75,000 | ~$75-$120 | Asia 1 region (Japan/Korea), J class. JAL releases business space generously close to departure. |
| Qatar Airways | New York (JFK) → Bangkok (BKK) via Doha (Qatar metal) | 85,000 | ~$100-$175 | Routes Asia 2 because final destination is South-East Asia. Qsuite J class on Qatar metal. |
Sweet spot
75,000 AAdvantage miles for Japan Airlines business class to Tokyo
JAL's J product on the 777-300ER is competitive with the best in the region; AAdvantage prices it as Asia 1, the lowest band, at 75,000 miles one-way. Sky Suite III is the cabin to target; the older Sky Suite II also bookable.
Worth knowing
Caveats and gotchas
AA limits oneworld partner award space release on some carriers (Cathay particularly post-2024). Build flexibility into the search dates.
AAdvantage requires phone booking for some partner routings — particularly multi-segment Asia itineraries. Phone fee waiver applies if the partner-only routing isn't bookable online.
The Qatar Airways partnership (re-extended in 2023) is bookable on aa.com but Qsuite availability is tight; flexibility on dates and connections through DOH is essential.
How to book
The actual booking channel
aa.com or AAdvantage Award Travel Service desk (for partner routings not bookable online). Partner award space is best searched via british-airways.com (for oneworld carriers) and then booked through AA.
Methodology
How this row is verified
AAdvantage retains a published partner award chart with fixed mileage costs per region — one of the more predictable award currencies among US programmes.
Mileage costs above reflect the published or observable rate for one-way business-class redemptions on the partner-metal options listed. Cash components are the taxes, government fees, and carrier surcharges the holder still pays at booking — these are the principal variable to model when comparing programmes against each other for the same metal. The chart structure is published and predictable; the cash-fee column is the variable that distinguishes one partner from another for the same destination.
Last verified: 2026-05-07. Each refresh re-checks the programme's own published chart, programme rules page, and (for dynamic programmes) recent search-result snapshots from the programme's award search tool.
